This weekend saw us take onboard a flock of 'genebank' Blommehöns. The proper name is "Svenska Lanthönsklubben Genbank Blommehöns"
The genebank is a project in Scandinavia to try and keep traditional and local breeds alive. The idea is that people around Sweden have a collection of a particular breed, and continue to breed it to keep the lines healthy, keeping the best examples of each breed and further breeding from them. We are responsible for about 1% of the Swedish Blommehöns. As part of the program we can sell registered birds for a premium. The new flock is tinged with some sadness, the couple who owned them prior to us have kept the breed for many years, and are now having to give up keeping animals on their farm due to the family getting much older, and her brother and sister no longer wanting to be responsible for keeping animals in retirement. The birds truly are beautiful and we're hoping to get a very healthy flock from our own little part of the genebank project. There are more pictures of our flock here . |
