Newsflash

It's a very strange time for us at the moment at Alledal Gård.

We've been here in Sweden for over 4 years, and during that time we have had some down moments, but mainly we've had a wonderful time trying to make a success of our little farm in Skåne. I have no regrets about coming to Sweden in the summer of 2006.

Now, I'm afraid, the end is nigh, and we are shutting down the farm. Over the last few weeks the chickens, ducks, and geese have found new homes, and hopefully in the next few days the goats will have new homes too. By the end of 2010 Alledal Gård will no longer be an active farm.

We've had some wonderful successes with the yellow ducks and the chickens particularly, and have found it to be incredibly rewarding. And for me personally, a fantastic way to switch off when I come back from work on my main job.

This is the beginning of a new chapter for us, and hopefully over the coming months we'll be able to share more of our plans for the future. If you've followed us over the years, many thanks, and I hope that we've brought some pleasure to you from our little corner of the Swedish countryside.

We were told by everyone at work that we were incredibly lucky to have a stream through our land, and we must have crayfish, especially as we had heron in there on a regular basis. It's August, it's crayfish season, so we decided to give it a go.

To further encourage us a brochure for one of the local DIY places came through the door and showed crayfish traps for sale there, cost a princely 26 SEK or about £1.90. We were going that way anyway to pick up some other stuff, so we decided to give it a go...

The traps were purchased and sprung into shape.

The first type was rather like a lobster pot.

The second type was a long tube construction.

We took them down to the bridge over our stream and prepared them for launching.

And set into the steam overnight to see what we caught, if anything!

Now to wait and see...

Next morning...

The trap had been visited in the night. Hurrah! The bait had been taken. Hurrah! It didn't wait around to be eaten. Boo!

We have re-set the trap with something heavier than fish for tomorrow.

 Day Two

Still no sign of crayfish, but this time they didn't take the bait. There was a huge thunderstorm last night, and the stream is running really fast. Will give it a bit longer to see what happens.
